Flying with Kids to India: The Complete Guide
Tips for long-haul flights with children — bassinet seats, entertainment, snacks, and more.
A long flight with children takes planning. Here is how to make it more manageable.
Choosing the right airline
Look at meal choices, in-flight entertainment, baggage allowance and whether the airline offers family services such as bassinets. Airline pages on this site list baggage and loyalty details.
Bassinet seats
For infants, ask for a bassinet seat when you book. There are only a few per cabin, and weight and age limits apply, so confirm with your airline.
What to pack in your carry-on
Snacks, a tablet loaded with shows, colouring books, a favourite blanket or toy, a change of clothes for each child, wet wipes and a few surprise toys. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before giving any medication, including motion-sickness medicine.
Timing your flight
Evening departures can suit children who will sleep for part of the flight. Avoid departures that wreck your usual sleep schedule.
At the airport
Arrive early. Many airports have family lanes at security, and many airlines offer family boarding. Let children burn off energy before boarding.
Managing jet lag
India is about 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of Toronto, depending on daylight saving time. Shift bedtimes a few days before you leave, get outside in daylight on arrival, and keep the first days low-key.
